PSP Popular in China, Though Not Sold There

Chinese gamers love the Playstation Portable (PSP), a handheld gaming device sold by the Sony Corporation. The playstation portable and PSP games are highly popular among game players in China. However, the peculiar thing is that the PSP itself is not even sold in China at all. Rather, Chinese gamers must buy playstation portables that are smuggled into the domestic market.

Sony does not sell PSP in Mainland China because the Chinese government prohibited all the production, distribution and imports of game consoles and accessories that are intended for use by Chinese consumers. This notice was issued in 2000, but is still being implemented today.

It is unclear just how many playstation portables have in fact been smuggled into China. However, it is suggested that the majority of these smuggled PSPs go through Shenzen City in South China.
