PSPgo Review

Filed in archive Product Review on April 11, 2010

The PSPgo is a small, hand-held console made by PlayStation. It is equipped with a 16GB hard drive and wifi capabilities. The PSPgo is furnished with the PlayStation Store where games can be downloaded with the push of a button as well as TV shows and movies.

Consumer reviews of the PSPgo are mixed. While a good majority of users love the product because of its versatility, accessibility to wifi and size (about 43% smaller than the PSP), there is a good chunk that prefer the original PSP. This is because the PSPgo has no disc port for games (so lose all your old PSP games if you choose to upgrade) and is completely wifi based. No wifi equals no fun for most consumers. Also, with the PSPgo, there is a small annotation regarding the wifi that says "User responsible for all associated fees.", which means that PlayStation will not set up any networks for the PSPgo users. Consumers must supply the internet as well as buy the games online via the PSPgo section of PlayStation Store on the device.

Overall, it seems as if the PSPgo is PlayStations version of the iPod, only it is equipped with manual controls rather than a touch screen. But that's just an opinion of quite a few people.

It seems like a great product for somebody who has plenty of wifi access (and a credit card), but for those in more rural areas, its going to be about the same as the original PSP.

So, do I recommend this product as a consumer? No. Even after playing around on the network for a few hours and testing out new games, I found the original PSP as a better buy. It also has the wifi network, and games are just as graphically stable and plentiful.

If the PSPgo is right for you, it can be found at Best Buy, PlayStation.com, and Gamestop for roughly $250.

Bringing Back the Old School: Mega Man 10

Filed in archive Game Reviews on April 1, 2010

Capcom is resurrecting 2D graphics in the new Mega Man 10, released for PS3 on March 31, 2010. The 8-bit style rekindles the love for arcade style gaming, while introducing new missions and villains.

An outbreak of the robo-virus called "Roboenza" (cough cough, the robot's swine flu) is taking down the mechanical masses. Not only is it creating chaos with the lack of technological aid to the humans, it is corrupting their software. In an almost zombie-like manner, the infected robots are creating havoc on their human makers.

Enter hero! Mega Man, in all his 8-bit glory, sets out to save the city, find out who the "Master Hacker" is, and find a cure for the lethal virus.

The game play will be similar to that found in your closest bowling alley. The arcade feel brings back nostalgia of the ol' days digging for quarters in the sofa, but adds a complex storyline to the 8-bit greatness. The vertical map is kin to that of the early Nintendo games. Start to finish, the levels are set up to mimic that of a chapter in the Mega Man mystery; complete with chapter bosses and nemeses.

The game is rated "E" for everyone by the ESRB for "mild cartoon violence." The game will be released for the PS3, Wii, and Xbox, and is fun for the whole family.

The Evolution of Sony PlayStation

Filed in archive PS System on March 28, 2010

Since PlayStation's debut in 1994, Sony has been setting the trend for technical Darwinism for well over a decade.

The concept of the PlayStation started in 1986 with a contract between Sony and Nintendo to create a gaming console that ran off of the new CD-ROMs. The agreement was to create a system that would run off the CD-ROM and a SNES port. The partnership was not even close to friendly, however. Nintendo's President Hiroshi Yamauchi decided that the deal favored Sony too much, and renegotiated the contract to increase the profits gained by Nintendo when the console was to be introduced. Rather than giving up the proceeds, Sony's Ken Kutaragi, known as the "Father of PlayStation", dropped the SNES port off the console and therefore rid the association with Nintendo.

In 1994 the first PlayStation was introduced to Japan, and a few months later to the UK and the US. PlayStation completely dominated the competing consoles at the time with their hit Gran Turismo.

The PlayStation One was released in 2000. It was equipped with a small LED screen and a car charger adapter so it could be played "on the go". It outsold all other gaming consoles that year including the PlayStation 2.

Also launched in 2000, the PlayStation 2 introduced the ability to play CDs as well as DVDs, allowing for more complex game play and a movie option. The system was so popular that it was being sold on eBay for up to $1,000. The PS2 has about 1,900 games (not including games released for earlier systems which are also compatible) and more being released this year. The Playstation 2 was upgraded to the PS2 Slim in 2004, which was a smaller and quieter system with the same specs as the original PS2. The PS2 Slim can be purchased for about $99.99 from most gaming retailers.

The PlayStation 3 was launched in 2006, and is still among the elite systems today. It is equipped with an internet access, several hard drive options, and is Blu-ray compatible. It also offers an exclusive online database through the console that allows live game play and browser access. It can be purchased for $399.99 at most gaming retailers.

The latest installment of the PlayStation console is the PlayStation 3 Slim which was released in 2009 and is 32% smaller than the current console and comes equipped with a 120 GB hard drive and a 250 GB option. It starts at $299 from PlayStation, Best Buy, and Gamestop.

Flower Seeds, Playstation, and Living the Green Life

Flower Seeds, Playstation, and Living the Green Life
© Lewis.Royden
If you are an avid PlayStation fan you probably spend hours a day playing games. Those hours are likely spent sucking up a lot of electricity. You are running a PlayStation, an internet router, and a high definition television among other things most of the time. All of these devices use electricity and electricity is not free or green.

You might find that you want to do something to counteract some of that time spent on the machine or heck you might just want to impress your wife. Regardless of your reason planting some flower seeds is a cool way to give back to the planet for what your game playing takes away.

Flowers help to keep the world moving. When grown organically they help to make the bee population stabilize itself, which is very important consider recent drop offs in the amount of living bees. If well mulched, keeping up with a flower garden is a lot easier than keeping up with a lawn. This means less time cutting grass and more time playing your favorite game.

So next time you are feeling guilty about all those hours logged on Red Dead Revolver then do something good for the world and fairly inexpensive. Buy a few packages of seeds and get to work.
